Won- BEST OVERALL FILM and BEST ACTION FILM for 2011 at MMTB
A short film made in collaboration with like minded comrades who all got together under the creative umbrella of the Movie Making Throughout the Bay group. Thanks MMTB!
A little background on the process of making the film
The challenge was to produce a short film less than fifteen minutes in duration within six hours. With five directors on deck, five teams consisting of a handful of actors, a writer, and a production assistant were formed. The goal was to complete the shooting that day and then edit the footage and create a final cut within a month. The subsequent shoot was an adrenaline rush that gave way to confidence and determination to get the shots in the can before time ran out.
At the ten minute pre-production meeting, my team and I discussed several story ideas while taking into account the talent and props on hand. There was no external sound available, so the narrative had to be a silent one; it would have to be an action/thriller since the actors were not in the mood for a comedy or drama; and the story would be based around the most prominent prop that we had: a sketch book with an intriguing binding. Concise scene descriptions were written down and then we were off to start what would be a grueling yet satisfying film shoot.
Shot entirely with a Nikon D300s, the tricky part was keeping the talent in focus during action oriented scenes. San Francisco’s major thoroughfare, Market Street, and its throngs of pedestrians played a major role in bringing a few of the scenes to life. The film was edited in Sony Vegas Pro software and graphic elements were implemented in Adobe After Effects. Sound effects and background music, all royalty free, were added to enhance the narrative. The total duration to complete the film, if we add the six hours of shooting, was two days.
The short film was screened at an MMTB event on April 9, 2011. Judges voted the film as the best in show and awarded the film first prize.

DOORWAY TO DARKNESS- 3.54 min
Made for the MMTB short film networking event, July 10, 2010.
We had basically 2 hours to make this little short since all the filming areas were being used during the production time. There was no script, just on the fly directing and improvisation. This is NOT a serious film for competition, it is an exercise is film production and training for all in the group. The MMTB event is a monthly event to network and exercise your filmmaking chops.
If our group elects to do so, we may shoot Part 2 to this film, but the decision is still pending. This short was basically half of the story and many scene and effects were not completed due to time constraints, but alas, it was a fun and challenging event. If you are in the bay area and wish to shoot a serious polished film of higher production value, please contact me at: firstname.lastname@example.org.

TURNING POINT- 7.04 min
This film was written and directed by me in ONE DAY for the MMTB film meeting in February. We had to come up with an story concept on the spot, write it, and shoot it in two hours.
This was a tremendous challenge with literally every minute accounted for. Shot with the Canon 7D at 24fps. Lens was the Canon 17-55 f/2.8. A few of the establishing shots did not get taken since we did not have enough time per the competition rules.
It turned out very closely to how I envisioned it would and looks good considering the extreme time limitations.
Color added to the footage using Magic Bullet Looks.
Available here in 720P HD. Total Run Time: 7:01.
